Attitude Toward our President

Question:
I am really disappointed Senator Obama was elected president, because I don't agree with his opinions on several moral issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. What should be my attitude toward him now as president
?

Answer:

We thank you for your question and trust you will find God’s answer in His book. The Lord has given us a book that supplies us “completely for every good work” 2Timothy_3:17. Christian living is a good work. We also learn that, “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” 2Peter_1:3.

The bible is quite plain about the Christian and our responsibility to those who hold public office. Good Christians make good citizens and the passages that teach us that are as follows.

Whether the government is a dictatorship or democratically elected, such as the one we have, we are commanded to be submissive (subject) to their rule or authority in so far as it does not conflict with God’s laws Rom. 13:1. In such cases we must obey God. Acts_5:29

  • While it is the “American way” we must not murmur or complain against them. Ecclesiastes_10:20

  •  Jesus taught us that we are to pay tribute (taxes) Matthew_22:21; Romans_13:6,7a

  • We are to pay honor (respect) to those who are over us, this includes “putdowns” and jokes which are common place in our society. Romans_13:7c

  • While we understand certain moral issues, such as murder (abortion) and same sex marriages (homosexual relationships) are sinful, we are to be obedient and peaceful citizens Romans13:1-5.

  • Further more, God wants us to live quiet and peaceful lives 1Timothy_2:2, and He wants us to pray for those persons “in authority” over us 1Timothy_2:1-2

Regardless of how desirable their outcome may seem to have been - the riots and demonstrations of the ‘50s ‘60’s and ‘70’s were in violation of this commandment. Even if the “church house steps” were used to promote civil disobedience, we must remember, the end does not justify their means. Property was destroyed and lives lost because God’s laws were dishonored. Indeed, “the way of transgressors is hard”. Proverbs_13:15

While kingdoms of men rise and fall, the Kingdom of God will endure forever, Daniel_2:44, and His word will judge us “in the last days” when we stand before Him. John_12:48

We strive to give a biblical answer to all questions that are submitted. We trust you will continue to turn to God’s word for answers to everyday problems.
