"I Am" Statements of Jesus

I Am the Bread of Life - John 6:35

It has been said that bread is the staff of life – meaning it is necessary if man is to live. It was bread that God provided man while wandering in the wilderness for forty years. It was bread that the Lord used to feed 5000 in Matthew 14. It was bread that Jesus used to teach the importance of remembering Him on the first day, Matthew 26.  When we feed on “the bread of life” we are feeding on the life-giving words of the Lord – John 6. Now we can see the importance of bread in our spiritual diet.

I Am the Light of the World - John 8:12

Science tells us that life can not exist without light. Man was lost and ignorant of the life giving words of the Lord until the gospel was preached. Consequently, He commissioned the apostles to carry the light (Mark 16:15 ) into “all the world” after He returned to heaven.

I Am the Door of the Sheep - John 10:7, 9

Mankind is often referred to as sheep, and sheep must be cared for by protecting them and keeping them together. The “door keeper” allows his sheep into safety AND keeps predators out, since sheep are easy prey for the wolf. The doorkeeper is responsible to see that neither a thief nor a wolf enter in.

I Am the Good Shepherd - John 10:11, 14

Sheep must be feed and nurtured. Their needs must be carefully monitored, and it’s the shepherd’s responsibility to be alert to those needs. Food and water must be supplied in abundance. Injured and sick sheep require special attention. Satan is described as a lion and must not be allowed to come near the sheep, which are unable to defend themselves.

I Am the Resurrection & the Life - John 11:25

“Is there life after death?” That has been the question since the first sin was ushered into the world. There is no question that we will die, that’s a given. The question man wrestles with is “WHERE will man live?” Jesus has given us the bread of life, He has provided us light, He has opened the door and as a good shepherd has promised us resurrection from death. What more can we ask?

I Am the Way - John 14:6

Man is forever asking, “Which way,” and Jesus has answered. We need not look any further; He is the way and He has paid the price. Acts 20:28

I Am the True Vine - John 15:1, 5

Jesus teaches a lesson on vines and branches. When a branch is separated from the vine it dies. His lesson is deeper than that. He is speaking of a man who is separated from God who will wither and die. Yet so many treat this lesson with contempt and go their merry way as if somehow that doesn’t apply.

The “I AM” has said:

In the past He has always been, in the future He will always be, and He is in the present. There has never been a time nor will there be a time when He is not.  Man can not escape the presence of God.

The “I AM” has Promised:

  • “I am with you A LWAY S.” He has promised us that He can be found. Unlike friends and neighbors, He will always be available. Matthew_28:20

  • “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Where ever you find God’s people meeting together, He promises to be there. Matthew_18:20

  • Again He promised, “I will NEVER leave you nor forsake you.” Jesus is never very far away. Hebrews_13:5 What a comforting thought that is.

  • Unlike some so called “fair weather friends”, He will be there for you when you need Him. “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” He promised to send another comforter. John 14:16 & 18
